A Decade of Highlights and Successes of CAP International
In 2024, CAP International proudly celebrates 10 years of existence and significant achievements in the fight to abolish the prostitution system. From advocacy and legislative changes to building a movement and fostering a cultural change, we continue to promote a concrete grassroots abolitionist approach.

The Birth of a Movement

The Coalition for the Abolition of Prostitution was launched in Paris on 11 February 2013, featuring nine co-founding member organisations.

First World Congress

CAP International organised its inaugural World Congress in Paris, bringing together 250 participants from 24 countries.

A Major Victory

In collaboration with its French members, Mouvement du Nid and Fondation Scelles, CAP International was instrumental in mobilising support for the 2016 French Abolitionist law, the first of its kind to guarantee state-sponsored exit programmes for individuals in prostitution.

First Publications of CAP International

CAP International published the report “Prostitution under International Human Rights Law,” available in five languages, followed by “The French Law of 13 April 2016 aimed at strengthening the fight against the prostitution system and providing support for prostituted persons” in March 2017.

“Last Girl First”

The 2nd World Congress for the Abolition of Prostitution was held in New Delhi, attracting 400 participants, including survivors of prostitution, trade union representatives, parliamentarians, and civil society activists from 30 countries.

#MeToo and Prostitution

Survivors of the sex-trade break silence: Ashley Judd, MeToo and Time’s Up leader, co-hosted a landmark event in Paris, articulating the connection between #MeToo and prostitution alongside international partners.

Advocacy at the United Nations Level

CAP International has consistently advocated for the abolition of prostitution at the UN, submitting numerous contributions and organising events, while mobilising champion states such as Sweden and France in efforts directed towards various UN committees and special rapporteurs.

“Prostitution: Neither Sex nor Work”

The 3rd World Congress for the Abolition of Prostitution took place in Mainz, Germany, gathering 400 activists from around 30 countries to challenge the harms of the “sex-work” narrative in a country often referred to as the “Brothel of Europe.”

First Abolitionist Week in Paris

CAP International hosted its inaugural Abolitionist Week, bringing together members in Paris for a week of mobilisation and capacity-building workshops aimed at strengthening the coalition.

CAP Members on the Frontline During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, CAP member organisations were on the frontlines, providing essential support to women and girls in prostitution, who were particularly affected and often overlooked by public authorities.

The Last Girl First! Campaign and Report

In March 2022, CAP released the study “Last Girl First! Prostitution at the Intersection of Sex, Race, and Class-Based Oppressions,” a two-year research project involving over 40 survivors and experts across 49 countries.

Second Abolitionist Week in Barcelona

After the global pandemic, 30 CAP member organisations from 25 countries gathered in June 2022 in Santa Coloma de Gramenet (Spain) for the 2nd International Abolitionist Week.

A Major Victory at the European Parliament

On 14 September 2023, the EU Parliament adopted the Noichl Resolution on prostitution, calling on EU Member States to embrace the Abolitionist Model—a significant victory for the abolitionist movement resulting from extensive advocacy by CAP International and its allies across Europe.

“Equality in Action!”

The 4th World Congress for the Abolition of Prostitution, hosted in Montreal, Canada, gathered over 400 participants from 35 countries, co-organised with four North American member organisations.

Major Victory at the European Court of Human Rights

On 25 July 2024, the ECHR upheld the French law on prostitution, previously challenged by opponents of the abolitionist model, marking a strong signal for Europe and a victory for all women, following a robust mobilisation from CAP International, Mouvement du Nid, and allied organisations.
