EXIT Programme: CAP Intl Publishes Its 3rd Handbook on Safe Abolitionist Spaces!
25 November 2025As part of the EXIT Programme and its series of Handbooks dedicated to the Grassroot abolitionist approach, CAP International is delighted to announce the publication of its third Handbook, focusing on Safe Abolitionist Spaces: safe environments designed for women in situations of prostitution. Based on the expertise of the coalition’s grassroots member organisations as well as on survivor-leaders’ testimonies, this guide highlights practices that support women sustainably on their path to exiting prostitution.
It notably emphasises the essential role of drop-in centres and shelters, which form the core of these safe spaces, offering women immediate support, protection, and tailored assistance throughout their exit journey. These safe spaces are said to be “abolitionists” as they embody places away from the inherent violence of the prostitution system, spaces where women can breathe, find the resources they need, be supported in all of their needs and aspirations.
The guide also presents the diversity of activities offered within these safe spaces: psychological counselling, group sessions that foster mutual aid and self-esteem, as well as practical workshops and hands-on activities that help break isolation and enable women to envision a life beyond prostitution.
The guide emphasises the essential role of survivors in designing and improving these spaces, recognising the value of their experience. However, it acknowledges the challenges that these safe spaces face, such as a lack of sustainable funding and staff which can hinder their ability to provide long-term support to women in prostitution.
Through concrete examples, survivor testimonies, and a list of recommendations, this Handbook aims to strengthen the capacities of professionals and organisations engaged in the fight against the prostitution system.
CAP Intl hopes that this new guide will help disseminate good practices and consolidate these safe spaces respectful and empowering for all women in or exiting prostitution.
