The European Parliament votes in favour of the abolition of prostitution in the EU!
29 September 2023On September 23rd 2023, the European Parliament adopted by a large cross-party majority the EU resolution on the regulation of prostitution in the EU: its cross-border implications and its impact on gender equality and women’s rights, tabled by MEP Maria Noichl.
CAP International which intervened in parliamentary hearings and contributed to providing feedback, testimony and its analysis within the scope of this Resolution, warmly welcomes this major resolution recognising prostitution as a form of violence against women, a system impacting the most marginalised women and girls and calling on Member States to adopt the abolitionist model.
Among others, the resolution highlights that:

- The UN and EU agreed language is “prostitution” not “sex work”
- Consent cannot be bought
- Women in prostitution experience violence amounting to those experienced by victims of torture
- The decriminalisation of pimping and the purchase of sex leads to an increase in the trafficking in human beings for sexual exploitation
- That the abolitionist model has had positive effects in decreasing demand, protecting persons in prostitution and shifting societal attitudes towards prostitution
- That Member States should adopt the pillars of the abolitionist model including the criminalisation of sex buyers, of pimps and the provision of protection, exit pathways to all persons in prostitution
This Resolution is a step further towards a Europe of equality between women and men, one where women and girls are not for sale.
